English Debate Competition for KAT 2010

It has been a journey, a windy one, lots of ups and downs, like a roller coaster, and i was strapped in tight. It was FUN, in short.

The Team
This journey started a few months ago, originally Ashman and I was not chosen to be part of the team, but we tagged along anyway. We cause a stir among the team at the beginning, which comprises of three teachers at the beginning, namely Miss Safinah, Puan Shuhaida and Mis Tumathir, but Miss Tum had to go away, health problem, leaving Miss Safinah and Puan Shuhaida to handle the team.

The team originally comprises of Alex, Fiqry, Mimie, Nono, Ashman, and yours truly. We were terrible at first, we argued on examples and hot air, lots of yapping, horrendous. A hosts of people came and gone, some Form 4 girls, Syahira 5A1 who seems to dislike me, for some unknown reasons. Alex and Fiqry was carried by the wind, carrying Syahira with them, it must have been a storm, to blow Syahira away. ^_^ Farah Adila came, and surprisingly Nana, I was unsure about Nana at first, knowing her English, but i was wrong, we needed her brain, her way of thinking, her mentality. Adila was a great addition to the team, her English was good. Then Qayya came, she was a handful, very fun, and loved the camera, in an obsessive way. Baim Form 4 student came, I didn't like him at first, he stinks. But we got along well. He still has my neck tie, which is expensive, must claim it from him. Ashman was also a handful, the teachers kicked him out at first, but he tagged along, as if nothing happened, tak malu. But he was invaluable in the end. Mimie, her english was great, i liked the way she speaks, she has the flair, and she was cute, in a barbie doll kind of way.

We practiced practically day and night, the commitment level from all of us at first way just so-so, but then we all snapped out of it and started to really commit ourselves. I as an outsider faced some difficulty especially in transport. But I managed to overcome it by persuading my aunt to send me to school at night, it must have been hard for her, to actually drive in the at night, considering she retires next year. Teachers sent me home after night practice, late, and i do mean late at night, after midnight kind of late. We all have school the next morning, we were all tired, but we were in this together i guess. Cikgu Zulhelmi was a great help, we needed him to be our mastermind, he has lots of ideas, lots to say, which implies to lots to listen, jot down, and remember, at night, add that with a tired mind and heavy eyes. We even had outsiders to help us, these two ladies came, talked with Miss Safinah at the back of the class, and gave comments. Lots of people were in this, lots of cooperation, lots of time, lots of energy, lots of food, lots of papers, lots of sacrifice.

The Competition
At first, we wanted to enter the district and the KAT, but time was tight, so we screwed the district plan. However, some of us were lucky to witness the final for the district, which was yawn i was told. However data was collected, points were jotted down, to serve as reminders, for the ultimate purpose of our sacrifice, KAT.

This years KAT was held at Teknik Kuala Lumpur, Teknik Kuala Selangor and Teknik Kajang. Our focus is in KL, thats where the debate competition was held. There were controversies right at the beginning, with TIKL(Teknik KL) wanting to sort of control everything, with the 'beloved' Leela as the mastermind. At first, they controlled the motion for the debate, with the intention to 'make it easier for the students', then they changed to motion for the debate, who do they think they are? It shows that KL is terrified of everyone. This means we had to change strategy, no more Mr. Nice Guy, we were going to be rebellious, evil, and noisy. Thats what we did for the first round, against Teknik Kuala Selangor.

The motion for first round was Handphones Are A Necessity Among Students In School. We were the opposition, and we were brash. We used hammer when the government used scalpel. We were impolite, we were harassing, hackling, and noisy. We rolled up our sleeves, we didn't wear blazers, we were like gangsters. And we kicked some ass. We won the first round. We even stick our tongue against the government, much to Miss Safinah's disdain. We were not going to do any of the things we did during the first round. We were still going to be evil, and brash, but no more harassing and hackling. We were going to be prefects, with blazers and our sleeves actually covering our arms. We took it this way, the opposition won the first round, and ruled the country as the government. We have to show that we were of high calibre, confident, and capable.

The original motion for the second round was Foodstalls Should Stop Operating After Midnight To Prevent Obesity Among Malaysians, which was a mouth full. Until Leela worked her magic, she changed the motion, dropping To Prevent Obesity Among Malaysians. We were angry, Teknik Shah Alam was so angry they didn't join KAT this year. At first we wanted to boycott TIKL, but something happened and we joined in anyway. We were government, TIKL was opposition. And the opposition sucked, the didn't answer our POI, they stare numbly when they couldn't answer our POI, and they didn't follow the rules of the House. We should have won, not them. Im sure the judges were biased, for all we know they could be Leela's neighbors. TIKL won the second round, without honor nor dignity, we should impale all of the TIKL debaters and their teachers. Qayya cried when they announced the 'winner', I lost my mood for the whole day, we were angry frustrated people.

The Finals
We went to watch the finals on friday, which was a big waste of time. It was KL vs. Teknik Sepang. KL was government. The motion was 1 Student 1 Sport Policy Should Be Made Compulsory In School. It was not dynamic, not a lot of actions, but a lot of screaming and clapping, from the audiences. KL mar... The winner was, surprise, KL. >.> So bosan. I hate KL.

Closure
It has been a wild ride, it was fun. Like all adventures, it was the journey, not the destination. I would like to thank Miss Safinah, Pn. Shuhaida, Cikgu Zulhelmi, Ashman, Adila, Mimie, Qayya, Nono, Nana, and Baim for your time and energy, we sacrificed a lot for this journey, and it was all worth it.
